Where does this energy consumption data come from?

Petroleum comes from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's international energy statistics, a U.S. Government work in the public domain. Electricity comes from Ember, and oil, gas and coal from the Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy — both via the Our World in Data energy dataset. EIA's international route publishes petroleum only, which is why the other fuels come from elsewhere. Each product credits its own source beneath the map.

How current is it?

The series are annual and countries report with differing lags, typically one to two years. Each country on the map shows the most recent year it reported, and that year is displayed alongside the value rather than being averaged away.

Why do the units differ between products?

Accepted Answer

Each source reports in its own conventional unit — EIA petroleum in thousand barrels per day (TBPD), while electricity, oil, gas and coal are all in terawatt-hours (TWh). The TWh series are directly comparable with each other; the TBPD series is not, so switching product also switches the unit shown. Country coverage differs too: electricity spans 213 countries, the fossil-fuel series about 76-79 major economies.

Is consumption the same as demand for imports?

No. Consumption counts everything a country burns or uses, whether produced domestically or imported. A large producer can consume heavily and still export. Pair consumption with production and trade data before drawing conclusions about import demand.

The EIA petroleum data is a U.S. Government work in the public domain, and Ember's electricity data is licensed CC BY 4.0 — both permit commercial use with credit.
